
Daan
Dercksen, DVM, Dip.ECRSHM, graduated with merit in 1987 from the
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht, The Netherlands. He is
registered as Specialist in Small Ruminant Health Care, according to
the Dutch system of specialization. From December 1987 to March 1990,
he worked in general practice in Germany and the Netherlands. From 1990
onwards, he has been working as small ruminant specialist at the
department of Small Ruminant Health, GD Deventer (GD- Animal Health
Service Deventer, the Netherlands). During the foot-and-mouth disease
epidemic in The Netherlands in 2001, he was head of different
vaccination centers in the Netherlands. From 2004 to 2006, he
participated in pre-accession projects and twinning projects in
Hungary, Slovakia and Romania: identification and registration of small
ruminants, health schemes and scrapie monitoring. In 2006, he was a
member of the specialist team first to diagnose bluetongue in the
Netherlands. Currently, together with his colleagues at GD Deventer, he
is organizing the Q-fever vaccination campaign in small ruminants in
